Anxious wait for Collingwood

12 April 2012

Paul Collingwood was today waiting to discover whether he was facing a ban from the International Cricket Council following England's slow over rate in their thrilling defeat by India in Bristol.

England were over 40 minutes late in completing their overs during last night's day-night encounter at the County Ground, which India won by nine runs to draw level in the seven-match NatWest Series.

Captain Collingwood, who was leading the side for only the fifth time, was summoned to a disciplinary meeting called by match referee Roshan Mahanama after play alongside coach Peter Moores and team manager Phil Neale.

If found guilty of failing to maintain a proper over rate - England were seven overs short - Collingwood could face a ban of between 50% and his full match fee of around £2,500 or a ban of up to two one-day internationals.

The International Cricket Council were due to announce the level of punishment from their Dubai base, but Collingwood insisted there were many mitigating circumstances for the prolonged innings, including trouble with a sightscreen during the early stages and Sachin Tendulkar receiving treatment for cramp in his left hand during his sparkling innings of 99.

"The nature of the innings with so many boundaries being scored and with various stoppages for one thing or another was always going to mean that the innings was going to be longer than usual," said Collingwood.

"Ultimately, however, it didn't seem to detract from what was a fantastic game of cricket."
