Another first for Brown as archers hit the target

The 22-year-old's appearance had already been historic as the first disabled athlete to compete for England against able-bodied competitors in a Games.

Brown, who competes sitting down or leaning on a stool because of chronic pain in her feet caused by reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and team-mates Nichola Simpson and Nicky Hunt were just one point short of the world record in their victory in the compound final against Canada.

Hunt, the world No1 in the event, clinched a 232-229 victory with the final arrow of the contest and afterwards paid tribute to Brown, who won Paralympic gold in Beijing two years ago.

"Danielle earned her place on our team by a mile and she shot really well," said Hunt. "We are proud of what she has achieved."

Brown added: "The Paralympics were amazing and it was my first big competition but winning here against able-bodied competitors is equally awesome."

In the cycling, Northern Ireland won their first track medal for 20 years with bronze in the men's 4000m team pursuit.

Wales' Becky James, who had won bronze in the women's 500m time trial, took silver in the sprint final as she failed to match the brute force of Australia's Anna Meares, while England's Anna Blyth picked up bronze in the 10km scratch race.

In the pool, England's Jenna Randall ended both the solo and duet synchronised swimming competitions with silver. Scotland's Lauren Smith took bronze in the solo event.
