Anelka is 'smallest gamble' - Allardyce

Bolton boss Sam Allardyce claims he has not taken a risk by signing former Manchester City and Arsenal striker Nicolas Anelka.

The Frenchman, who has joined the Wanderers from Fenerbahce in a club record deal worth £8million, has a reputation for causing trouble, but Allardyce believes he will be a superb addition to his squad.

He said: "I think it is the smallest gamble we have ever taken. Nic's record speaks for itself. We want to help him along the way and produce and perform, and I am really looking forward to the opportunity of working with him and the rest of the squad is as well."

He added: "It's full-on now and Watford will be his debut due to the unfortunate injury to Kevin (Davies)."

Anelka revealed he had his heart set on a return to the Premiership and after speaking to Allardyce, decided to return to the north-west.

"I'm here because Bolton came first, I think. I know Manchester, I know Sam Allardyce is a big manager and he spoke to me. I'm glad to come back to England and play for him," he said.

"I saw Bolton last year and they played great... and I think it's a good club and a big challenge. I'm glad to be back in England to play for Bolton and try to play in Europe next season.

"I like England because of the way the game is played - very quick - and the fans, the way you play football here. I like everything about England and when I wanted to leave Fenerbahce I said I wanted to come back to England."
