Andy Roddick stays cool despite his form being far from hot

13 April 2012

Andy Roddick today dismissed fears his inconsistent form is harming his bid to be a serious threat at Wimbledon after crashing out of the AEGON Championships.

Roddick was a runner-up at both tournaments last year but, having made an early exit at the French Open, he fell by the wayside in the third round at Queen's yesterday's losing 6-4, 7-6 to Israel's Dudi Sela.

That loss to the 14th seed plus his other recent displays have raised serious fears that the big-serving American is struggling for form and confidence.

However, Roddick countered: "I'm not super concerned about the way I'm hitting the ball and I am not stressing out about any one part of my game. If I am being frank, I had a lot of time practising before the French Open, played some matches, and then had a lot of time practising here at Queen's. Now I have a lot of time practising before Wimbledon and it is, basically, getting over my own impatience as opposed to worrying about anything about my game.

"I would much rather spend the time getting some matches in and rather kind of have them count for something."

Defending champion Andy Murray was forced to return to court today to complete his third-round clash with Mardy Fish after he branded as "ridiculous" a controversial decision to halt the contest at 8.30pm with the match tied 4-6, 6-1, 3-3.

Fish appealed to umpire Cedric Mourier about the light after letting a 3-0 lead in the deciding set slip and supervisor Tom Barnes agreed to halt the match to the consternation of the Briton and the crowd who booed the decision.

The world No4 said: "Just because Mardy said we can't play in this light we stop. It's absolutely ridiculous. We only stop when he wants to and he was happy to play when leading 3-0 but not at 3-3. I was at a tournament last week [French Open] where they played at 9.20pm so why are we stopping?"
