Andy Murray was satisfied with his first match of the North American hard-court season as he defeated surprise Wimbledon quarter-finalist Nick Kyrgios 6-2, 6-2 at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The British No1 looked confident and sharp, disposing of the 19-year-old in 54 minutes under the eye of new coach Amelie Mauresmo.

Murray had to be wary of Kyrgios, who shot into the limelight last month when he knocked out world No1 Rafa Nadal and No14 Richard Gasquet from the grass-court Grand Slam.

However, the young Australian never threatened Murray, who served up seven aces, committed just 11 unforced errors and never faced a break point.

“I thought I did most things pretty solidly,” said Murray. “I didn’t make too many errors. I moved well and had a high first-serve percentage. It was a solid match for a first match back after four and a half, five weeks out.”

Meanwhile, Britain’s leading women’s player, Heather Watson, edged a gruelling second-round encounter to beat Dominika Cibulkova 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 at the Rogers Cup in Montreal.

The world No57 bridged a 45-place gap in the rankings to topple the Slovakian, who beat her in straight sets at the Australian Open.
