Anderton in plea to Spurs over new deal

Adrian Curtis13 April 2012

Darren Anderton today told Tottenham's new owners ENIC that he wants to open immediate talks about a new long-term contract.

His desire to stay at White Hart Lane comes as clubs across Britain and Europe are now publicly declaring their interest in skipper Sol Campbell.

Celtic and Liverpool are the latest to make it known they are monitoring Campbell's situation but they already face competition from Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Both players will be entitled to quit Spurs on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling at the end of the season but Anderton has now made it clear he wants to sit down with ENIC as soon as possible.

David Buchler, newly appointed executive vice-chairman of the club, met the players last week and has indicated that he wants to end the uncertainty over their futures.

Anderton said: "It could be the last major contract of my career so it's got to be absolutely right for me. I want to do what makes me happy and I honestly hope we can sort something out. I hope we'll be able to get things moving with my agent within the next week or so."

Anderton's request is likely to be welcomed by Buchler who is ready to do everything possible to persuade Anderton, Campbell and striker Les Ferdinand to stay at White Hart Lane.

Buchler said: "There can't be a single supporter of the club that doesn't want Sol, Darren, and Les to still be here next season and that includes me. I will pull out every stop that I can to try and persuade them to stay."

Buchler will have to move swiftly if Spurs are to hang on to Campbell with Celtic manager Martin O'Neill becoming the latest manager to admit that the player is on his wanted list.

Celtic, running away with the Scottish Premier League this season, will have the cash to meet the Spurs defender's wage demands but unlike foreign clubs, O'Neill will have to wait until the end of the season before he can make any move.

O'Neill, who has already taken Ramon Vega on loan from Spurs, said: "Someone like Sol will have choices - not only in the number of clubs - but also a number of leagues across Europe.

"I'm looking to get a few players in for next year and, because I'm only going to have a month to do it, I already have a list of out-of-contract players."

European clubs can begin negotiations with Campbell now and Standard Sport understands that representatives from Bayern Munich have already contacted him.

Campbell insists he wants to stay at Spurs but is likely to keep his options open until the club discuss a new deal with him.

Meanwhile, Tottenham's record buy Sergei Rebrov faces a race to be fit for the club's FA Cup quarter-final tie at Upton Park on Sunday.

The Ukrainian international missed Tottenham's 2-1 defeat at Derby on Saturday after sustaining a knee injury in training.

The £11 million striker will undergo intensive treatment over the next few days in the hope he will recover in time.
