Anderson hails Saints young guns

12 April 2012

St Helens coach Daniel Anderson saluted his young guns after the 54-4 romp over Huddersfield.

Saints, who were without Sean Long, Francis Meli and Paul Sculthorpe, ran in 10 tries to move two points clear of Bradford and Leeds at the top of the engage Super League and Anderson was delighted with the contribution of his youngsters with teenager Steve Tyrer claiming a 22-point haul with two tries and seven goals.

Anderson said: "There is an expectation from our younger players and they are taking their opportunities. Steve Tyrer, Paul Clough and Mattie Smith all did well and the old stagers are also contributing."

He added: "I don't get surprised too often but we did brilliantly in the first half. Huddersfield will bounce back but I cannot ask any more of my players. It was a real quality show."

Huddersfield boss Jon Sharpe said: "I saw things tonight that I have not seen from us all year. We have built a well-organised defensive unit this year but did not see any of it tonight and we were second best in every department.

"We were up against a side that is very hot and they will do that to a lot of teams. But the performance itself, never mind the scoreline, was extremely disappointing."

Jon Wilkin (2), Leon Pryce, Willie Talau, Ade Gardner, Lee Gilmour and Paul Wellens claimed the other Saints tries.

Chris Nero claimed Huddersfield's only try.
