African Nations match turns into brawl

13 April 2012

World Cup qualifiers Cameroon and Senegal both reached the semi-finals of the African Nations Cup as the tournament, which had not previously produced a sending-off, suddenly turned nasty.

Senegal's 2-0 quarter-final win over the Democratic Republic of Congo was marred by two brawls, a controversial second goal and the first red card of the competition - - handed out to Congolese substitute Alexis Tekumu for a twofooted challenge.

It also ended with the referee being escorted off the pitch by riot police to protect him from furious Congolese players. Earlier, defending champions Cameroon had a 1-0 win over Egypt in their quarter-final clash. Cameroon and Senegal joined Nigeria and hosts Mali in the last four.
