African adventure a success for Spurs

Kaizer Chiefs 0 Spurs 2

Tottenham won their first trophy under Glenn Hoddle - a perspex model of South Africa shaped like a football - after beating Kaizer Chiefs in Cape Town last night with goals from Robbie Keane and Matthew Etherington.

Hoddle, talking after the final friendly of Tottenham's tour, said: "Results are not important but it's always nice for a manager to come through pre-season with as many clean sheets as possible and we got one against the Chiefs. It was a good performance and good win."

A goal after just 27 seconds set Spurs on their way when a shot from new Portuguese striker Helder Postiga took a deflection off Keane's heel and bobbled into the net. They then added a second three minutes before half-time from Etherington, who had been set clear by a pass from Darren Anderton.

On Saturday, Tottenham were beaten by Orlando Pirates 2-1 in Durban on a poor surface and Hoddle said the pitch at the Newlands Stadium made a big difference to his side.

He said: "It was a far better surface for us. Newlands is a great arena for football. The fans are close to the pitch, it was a great atmosphere and being a night game there was a nice greasy surface- - a bit of an English surface - so we felt quite at home.

"Once I saw the pitch in Durban I knew it would be difficult task for us to get a result against the Pirates. But people in South Africa were looking for results, we were looking for a good run out.

"Pre-season is about getting through matches, trying to bed down tactical things, looking at youngsters, gelling new players. We've done all that because we've had a few lads injured and, to a certain degree, it has gone well."

Meanwhile, a Spurs XI, featuring Chris Perry, drew 0-0 at Leyton Orient. Hoddle's side return to England today before Sunday's friendly against PSV Eindhoven.
