90 minutes of fame ...

13 April 2012

Who said the romance has gone out of the FA Cup? Rubbish.

Alex Murphy

Alan Taylor, West Ham United, 1975

Just five months before the Cup Final win over Fulham, Taylor was playing for Fourth Division Rochdale. West Ham snapped him up for £40,000, and Taylor repaid them with two-goal displays in the quarter-final, semi-final and Final. "Sparrow", who also played for Norwich, Cambridge, Hull, Burnley and Bury, now runs a newsagents in Norwich.

Dickie Guy, Wimbledon, 1975

Guy's penalty save from Peter Lorimer transformed him from Southern League nonentity into a celebrity. The Dons had already beaten First Division Burnley in the third round, now Guy's spot-kick stop helped hold Leeds United to a 0-0 draw at Elland Road. Wimbledon lost the replay, but Guy's fame was assured.

Chris Kelly, Leatherhead, 1975

His big-headed persona saw the Press christen him The Leatherhead Lip. In round three, Kelly scored as the Isthmian League club won 1-0 at Brighton. But they lost 3-2 against First Division Leicester after being 2-0 up.

Roger Osborne, Ipswich Town, 1978

Arsenal hearts were broken by Osborne's Cup-winning goal at Wembley. Osborne asked to be subbed after scoring - the emotional intensity proved too much for him. Drifted out of football soon after.

John Mackenzie, Harlow Town, 1980

Became the country's most celebrated computer programmer for a day when his goal knocked Second Division Leicester out of the Cup in a third round replay in front of 9,000 fans.

Matthew Hanlan, Sutton United, 1989

The last non-League club to knock out a top-flight side. A 2-1 win over Coventry was sealed by a goal from Hanlan, who is now a quantity surveyor.

Tim Buzaglo, Woking, 1991

Scored a hat-trick in the Isthmian League club's 4-2 victory at West Brom, earning them a fourth-round tie at First Division Everton, where they lost 1-0. Buzaglo still plays parks football in Surrey and also plays cricket for his native Gibraltar.
