A young Doctor Who fan’s reaction to the Jodie Whittaker casting announcement has gone viral on Twitter.

Jenny Trout shared a video of her daughter watching Sunday’s big reveal, following the Wimbledon Men’s Finals, in which she shrieks in delight after finding out that the 13th Doctor is a woman.

The youngster’s face looked stony as she concentrated on the announcement, before she turned to the camera in joy, saying: “The new Doctor is a girl!”

The announcement of Whittaker has provoked mixed reactions on social media, with a number of dies hard fans up in arms about the casting of a woman.

Whittaker has since urged fans of the show not to be “scared” of the fact that she’s the first woman to play the role.

“I want to tell the fans not to be scared by my gender,” Whittaker said after the announcement.

“Because this is a really exciting time, and Doctor Who represents everything that’s exciting about change.”

The Broadchurch star admitted that she was always trying to “push” herself in every new role that she takes on.

“It feels completely overwhelming, as a feminist, as a woman, as an actor, as a human, as someone who wants to continually push themselves and challenge themselves, and not be boxed in by what you’re told you can and can’t be,” she said. “It feels incredible.”

Doctor Who’s new head writer Chris Chibnall, who worked with Whittaker on Broadchurch, said that he had always planned to make the 13th Doctor a woman.

“I always knew I wanted the Thirteenth Doctor to be a woman and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice,” he said.
