If you're looking for something that's fun for all the family you've come to the right place. Treat them to a show. There's nothing like it, says

Clive Aslet.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

The car's the star in Adrian Noble's impressive blockbuster version of Ian Fleming's children's classic. Special effects and swooping songs will have children cooing with delight - and the infamous child-catcher is suitably vile. Palladium, 8 Argyll Street, W1 (020-7494 5020). Prices from £15.

Stomp!

Lively, bin-bashing, senses-assaulting sensation. This has the surliest of teenagers and the grumpiest of grannies heading for the exit with a big smile on their faces. No wonder it's spawned so many copycats. Vaudeville Theatre, Strand, WC2 (0870 890 0511). Prices from £15.

Mamma Mia!

There's no reason on earth why a transparent plot threaded through a selection of old Abba songs should work this well on stage, but work it does, so just go with the flow. The Friday evening show at 5pm is a perfect end-of-week treat for the kids. Prince Edward Theatre, 28 Old Compton Street, W1 (020-7447 5400). Prices from £18.50.

Our House

If they've already seen Mamma Mia! umpteen times and need a break, try this for size. Camden recreated on stage and set to a Madness soundtrack has an energy and verve that's strangely buoyant - and the story holds its own. Cambridge Theatre, Earlham Street, WC2 (020-7494 5080). Prices from £12.50.

Grease

Agreed, it may not be the most sophisticated production on the London stage, but the songs and characters are familiar and the enthusiasm will win you over eventually. Half-price children's tickets are available Mon-Thur, placing it in the realms of the affordable. Victoria Palace, 8 Victoria Street, SW1 (020-7834 1317). Prices from £7.50.
