And so actress Katie Holmes, 26, presented beau and Hollywood icon Tom Cruise with MTV's first such award.

Earlier, the 42-yearold actor's former wife, Nicole Kidman, also presented an award at the ceremony in Los Angeles.

Collateral star Cruise, who has starred in more than 40 films in two decades, said: 'If I've been able to entertain you at all, then I thank you for allowing me to.'

Other winners included Leonardo DiCaprio for his performance in Aviator and Daryl Hannah and Uma Thurman for best fight in Kill Bill Vol. 2. Rachel McAdams took three awards, including best kiss in The Notebook, and comedy performance went to Dustin Hoffman for Meet The Fockers.

Napoleon Dynamite won best movie and 1980s movie Breakfast Club got an excellence award.
