Three people fainted at a screening of Danny Boyle's new film '127 Hours'.

The film - which stars James Franco as Aron Ralston, a climber who cut his arm off when it became trapped under a rock in Utah - caused cinema-goers at the film's premiere at the Toronto Film Festival to run for the door, according to one critic.

John Foote, writing for film website The Wrap, said: "I cannot remember a reaction to a film like this in a very long time, perhaps not since 'The Exorcist' sent audiences scurrying for the doors.

"At the screening Monday, once again there were several mad dashes for the door when these scenes came on, and more than a few moviegoers were looking anywhere but the screen.

"You could see people in shock, struggling to stay in their seats, working to get past the intensity of what was going on in front of them."

At the end of the film, director Danny Boyle received a standing ovation, while Ralston - who wrote book 'Between A Rock And A Hard Place' based on the ordeal - thanked all those involved with the project.

He told the attendees: "I have to say thank you to everyone who's standing next to me on the stage."

'127 Hours' will close the London Film Festival in October ahead of its cinematic release in the US in November.
