Even for the most ardent lovers of life in the city, there are times when a brief respite from the noise, bustle and pollution is required.

Today a guide lists the 25 best "great escapes" from London.

From Bath and Brighton to Winchester and Windsor, it highlights the best options for museum enthusiasts, the most fascinating historical sites and the most picturesque villages.

"You may be surprised to discover just how much of England you can explore using London as a base," said Stephen Brewer, co-author of the book with Donald Olson.

"These are some of the most remarkable palaces, towns, gardens, cathedrals and other sites in all the land. You can enjoy a day's outing in a fascinating place and be back in the capital in time for dinner and a play."

The book is published after a government study, The State Of The Countryside 2004, revealed that Londoners' appetite for country life is at a record level.

About 150,000 people a year abandon London in search of a rural idyll, and the 25-44 age group is leading the mass migration to the countryside, attracted by better health, longer life expectancy and lower crime.

Best Day Trips From London - 25 Great Escapes By Train, Bus Or Car, published by Frommer's Guides, is available in bookshops for £11.99.
