The Empire Strikes Back has been named the favourite Star Wars film.

Empire movie magazine carried out a poll to mark the release of the final Star Wars movie Revenge Of The Sith, to find the top Star Wars hero, alien and minor character.

Han Solo was voted the favourite hero, followed by Obi-Wan and Luke Skywalker.

Star Wars: A New Hope, the first of the George Lucas films in 1977, was named the second favourite after The Empire Strikes Back (1980).

It was followed by Return Of The Jedi (1983), and the sixth instalment, Revenge Of The Sith, even though it has not been released yet.

Attack Of The Clones (2002) came fifth and The Phantom Menace (1999) sixth.

Darth Vader was named the best Star Wars villain in the survey of more than 40,000 readers, and R2D2 the favourite droid.

Chewbacca was top alien, followed by Jabba the Hutt, Jawas and Yoda.

X-wing pilot Wedge Antilles, played by Ewan McGregor's uncle, Denis Lawson, was favourite minor character, beating the likes of Boba Fett and Lando Calrissian.

The 50 Greatest Star Wars moments can be seen in the June issue of Empire from Friday.
