Uggie the dog, who played a significant role in Oscar-winning film The Artist, has died aged 13.

The Jack Russell Terrier was put to sleep after suffering a prostate tumour.

The Artist won five Oscars in 2012, including the coveted Best Picture award, while Uggie himself was presented with the ‘Palm Dog’ award at Cannes film festival.

As well as The Artist, Uggie also starred as Queenie in Water For Elephants with Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in 2011.

His other achievements included an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show where he rode a skateboard, a photo shoot for The Hollywood Reporter, and a stint as Nintendo’s first ever ‘spokesdog’.

He also published a memoir, Uggie: My Story, in October 2012 – not a bad feat for a dog.

Uggie was adopted by animal trainer Omar Von Muller after he was rejected by two previous owners, and lived with the Von Muller family in North Hollywood.
