Classic rockers The Police were confirmed today as headliners for one of the country's top music festivals.

The band, fronted by Sting, will perform at the Isle of Wight Festival, following on from the Rolling Stones who topped the bill at this year's event.

Isle of Wight Festival promoter John Giddings said: "It's a coup to get The Police for the festival. We're very happy to have the biggest tour of the last two years stopping by the Isle of Wight."

The Police, famous for hits Roxanne and Every Breath You Take, are currently touring Central and South America and will start 2008 with shows in Australia, New Zealand and Japan before arriving in Europe for dates in Denmark, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Norway, Belgium, Germany and the UK.

Back together: Reformed 80s chart-toppers The Police are set to cement their renaissance with top billing at next's top rock festival in the Isle of Wight

Their appearance as the Sunday night closers on the Isle of Wight will be the only UK festival included in the tour, according to organisers.

The event, held at Seaclose Park, Newport, will be the seventh year since the festival was reincarnated in 2002, with headliners including The Who, David Bowie, REM and Coldplay.

With 50,000 music fans, the event won the Best Major UK Festival Award at this year's UK Festival Awards.

The promoters aim to recreate the spirit of the famous festivals held on the island at the end of the 1960s which featured legendary performances by acts such as Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Bob Dylan.

Tickets for the festival, which runs from June 13 to 15, go on general sale at 9am on December 10.
