Robert Doisneau - Un Moment De Bonheur

Now, this is a good idea: Dom Perignon champagne sponsoring an exhibition of photos by Robert Doisneau, a capturer of champagne moments if ever there was one. Who hasn't seen The Kiss (Le Baiser de l'Hotel de Ville) and responded to its depiction of timeless passion with much the same fizzy feeling as is frequently caused by a glass of bubbly. A feeling, in fact, equally artificially induced in both cases, because Doisneau's picture is of carefully-posed models, not lovers overtaken by a moment of public affection.

These 50-odd pictures aren't all as well-known as The Kiss, of course, but all have been chosen because they depict particularly sparkling moments: the Le Regard Oblique series, as endearingly comical as it is dated, places an invisible camera inside a picture shop with a saucy nude woman on one wall, then captures the shock, titillation or embarrasment of the window-shoppers whose sideways glance lights on the image. Looking at a Doisneau print is like falling in love with champagne goggles on: beguilement by trickery, but no less enchanting for that.
