FLORA LONDON MARATHON

London is given over to runners instead of traffic - around 50,000 of them will cover the 26.2 mile course from Greenwich to The Mall.

The race offers the usual mix of serious sprinters, keen amateurs and blokes in funny costumes. Lots of good celebrityspotting opportunities, with participants including Nell McAndrew, Jeffrey Archer, Major Charles Ingram and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

The oldest runner, Fauja Singh, 93, only took up marathons four years ago and has since run both the London and New York circuits. For a map of the route, and guide to the 65 pubs participating with bands, DJs or bunting (as part of the Best Dressed Pub Competition) visit www.london-marathon.co.uk.

Shooters Hill Road, Greenwich Shooters Hill Road, SE3 (020-7902 0200). Sun 18 Apr, from 7am, free.
