Robert Downey Jr has released a statement after his son’s recent arrest for cocaine possession.

The actor’s son, 20, was pulled over by the Los Angeles County Sheriff on Sunday, after he was seen smoking something out of a pipe in the passenger seat of the car he was travelling in.

The deputy pulled over the car and then allegedly found cocaine in Indio’s possession.

Robert, 49, who has had his own struggles with drug addiction, told Us magazine: "Unfortunately there's a genetic component to addiction and Indio has likely inherited it. There is a lot of family support and understanding, and we're all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being.

"We're grateful to the Sheriff's department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale."

This isn’t the first time Indio has been caught up in drugs, as he was reportedly admitted to a rehab facility last October for prescription drug abuse.

Robert has reportedly been helping his son with his drug problem for years, with a source telling TMZ.com: "Because of Robert's own struggle he's very much in tune with his son's sobriety. And that has really helped Indio."
