Doctor Who's scriptwriter Russell T Davies and Extras' Ricky Gervais will go head-to-head in the best writer category at the British Academy Television Craft Awards next month.

Andrew Davies, the writer of the BBC's Dickens adaptation Bleak House, and Peter Kosminsky, who penned The Government Inspector, the Channel 4 drama about the death of Dr David Kelly, have also been nominated.

Gervais is up for the award for Extras, the BBC2 follow-up to The Office, with his writing partner Stephen Merchant.

Bleak House, which was shown in instalments and starred Gillian Anderson and Charles Dance, has been nominated for eight awards.

The BBC sci-fi return of Doctor Who and Channel 4's Elizabeth I, starring Helen Mirren, each have four.

To the Ends of the Earth, the BBC2 19th Century sea-faring trilogy, has five.
Casanova (BBC3), featuring Doctor Who star David Tennant, and historical epic Rome (BBC2) have three.

The awards take place on May 19 at The Dorchester hotel in London.
