Pop singer Edwyn Collins has contracted the MRSA superbug while recovering from life-saving brain surgery.

The 45-year-old former Orange Juice frontman, who also had a solo top five hit with A Girl Like You in 1995, has suffered two brain haemorrhages since February - the second while being treated in hospital.

Collins contracted MRSA after his operation scar became infected and is fighting for his life at the Royal Free Hospital in North London.

A hospital spokesman said: 'The patient's family have expressed their gratitude and support for the Royal Free's care of Edwyn Collins, but have asked us not to comment on his condition.'
