England captain David Beckham is to become a United Nations goodwill ambassador helping poverty-stricken children around the world, it was reported today.

The Real Madrid star is said to be "thrilled and honoured" by the role.

Beckham, 29, was personally chosen by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan because he is seen as an inspiration to young people.

His duties will include helping the poorest children around the globe achieve a better life through sport.

The father of two, whose wife Victoria is pregnant, is expected to go to Africa in the New Year, according to The Sun.
