New claims could damage Beckham brand

The latest allegations made against England footballer David Beckham could have a damaging effect on his lucrative sponsorship contracts, a media expert said.

The soccer superstar reportedly earns more from his off-pitch deals and product endorsements than in wages from his Spanish club Real Madrid.

Only last month a logo inspired by the player's trademark free kicks was unveiled by sportswear manufacturer Adidas.

The contract is among a string of corporate deals thought to have earned Beckham £6.75 million last year.

The former Manchester United player also has contracts with mobile phone giant Vodafone, haircare product range Brylcreem, Police sunglasses, soft drink brand Pepsi and high street chain Marks & Spencer.

The News of the World story alleged the soccer star's nanny Abbie Gibson had witnessed a series of rows between the player and his wife, former Spice Girl Victoria.

The nanny also claimed Mrs Beckham had told her the England captain wanted to split up.

Publicist Max Clifford said: "If an important part of that (Beckham) brand is the ideal family, the happy family, the devoted family, the dedicated family - this then, is far more damaging then a couple of girls making revelations that they allegedly had affairs with David."

"I think that major companies and corporations will look at it, but it depends.
"From a footballing point of view, from a sporting point of view - no problem at all. All that matters is that he's successful on the football pitch.

"If the importance to your company is Beckham the family man, the devoted husband, the devoted and happy couple, then yes, it's taken a real knock today.

"As I say, in my the view the most damaging knock of all.

"So in other words, will it effect sponsors? Who knows. Could it affect sponsors? Well particularly if it is a family brand."
