Lady Gaga dominated the MTV Video Music Awards, taking home the biggest prize haul for over 20 years.

The 24-year-old singer collected eight of the famous Moonman statuettes in the biggest win since Peter Gabriel's groundbreaking video for Sledgehammer helped him win 10 in 1987.

Most of her awards were for her video Bad Romance, and she wept as she collected her final prize and the most coveted — video of the year.
She said: "I was so nervous for tonight that I would let my fans down."

The singer, real name Stefani Germanotta, wore a different outfit for each of her three trips to the stage in Los Angeles — the other wins were announced off-camera — including one costume which resembled a black bin liner.

Her eight wins matched the total won by A-ha in 1986, when they released the innovative video for Take On Me.

In addition to video of the year, she also took home the prizes for female video, pop video, dance video, choreography, direction and editing. Her raunchy lesbian prison-themed video for Telephone featuring Beyoncé won best collaboration.

British band Florence + The Machine won best art direction for their hit song Dog Days Are Over.

The group, led by Florence Welch, also performed to the audience which included Justin Bieber, Eminem and Taylor Swift.

The only other multiple winner was Eminem, who won two awards for Not Afraid. The rapper opened the show with a medley of songs, but hastily left the Nokia Theatre before accepting his statuettes.

Swift, who went home empty-handed, performed a song that recounted her on-stage controversy with Kanye West. He interrupted her acceptance speech at last year's ceremony by grabbing the microphone and declaring that Beyoncé was a more worthy winner.

Teen pop idol Bieber was named best new artist for his song Baby, featuring rapper Ludacris. The 16-year-old said: "I come from a little town in Canada, I never thought I'd be in this position."

Other winners included actor Jared Leto's rock band 30 Seconds to Mars, Muse, the Black Keys, Jay-Z and Alicia Keys.
