Mariah Carey is too "superstitious" to speak about her rumoured pregnancy.

The singer is believed to be expecting her first child with husband Nick Cannon but is refusing to publically confirm the news.

In a cryptic post on her website, she wrote: "I appreciate everyone's well wishes. But I am very superstitious. When the time is right, everyone will know - even Cindi Berger (Mariah's publicist)."

Nick has further fuelled rumours by revealing he believes the point of getting married is to have children.

He told Access Hollywood: "The purpose of having a union and getting married is to have a family. Right now, her and I are family, but of course we would love to expand."

Despite their public silence, Nick and Mariah have reportedly been telling their friends they are "overjoyed" to be expecting a baby together.

A source said: "Nick has been telling friends how excited he is to be a dad.

"Mariah has tried so hard to get pregnant. She's very excited. She wants to wait as close to full term as possible before going public with the news to her fans."
