London's Leicester Square was filled with hysterical, screaming Leonardo DiCaprio fans for the premiere of his new film Inception.

Before the Titanic actor and his co-stars in Christopher Nolan's new sci-fi thriller had even arrived on the maze-patterned red carpet, one fan had already fainted, and bottles of water were handed out to the crowd.

Big night: Ellen Page, Leonardo DiCaprio and Marion Cotillard pose for the cameras

DiCaprio plays an operative trained to steal ideas from people's dreams in the highly original film, written and directed by Nolan of Memento and The Dark Knight fame.

The three-times Oscar nominee has risen from teen idol to critically acclaimed actor since his breakthrough role in What's Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993, but he insists he is still not yet living the dream.

DiCaprio said: "I still have a lot to prove to myself. I have a lot of characters that I still want to play.

Loyal fans: the crowd went wild for Leo

"When you're a young man and you've seen a lot of great cinematic performances in the past, you want to emulate them and you want to be something as close to what they achieved as you possibly can. So I'm dreaming of doing this as long as I can and keep helping myself."

The carpet was lined with excited young girls brandishing love messages on posters and shouting "I love you Leo", and "Will you marry me?"

But Sir Michael Caine, who plays DiCaprio's father-in-law in the film said: "The wonderful thing about Leonardo is he's very good looking but he doesn't use that to his advantage, he relies on his acting skills."

A Lott of style: Pixie combines a feminine blue dress with a leather jacket and boots

Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard, who plays DiCaprio's wife in the film, also attended the premiere looking radiant in a pink floral gown, and Juno star Ellen Page looked elegant in a little black dress.

Nolan attended with his wife and producer Emma Thomas, and Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Tom Hardy were among the rest of the all-star cast in attendance.
