She found fame as the beautiful but uptight brunette in Sex And The City. Now Kristin Davis is making her long-awaited return to our TV screens - as a bug-eyed yellow cartoon spider.

The actress is the star name behind a children's show tipped to become as popular as The Tweenies and Bob The Builder. Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends is based on a series of colourful illustrated books that have sold five million copies in America, where the computer-animated TV version attracts a million pre-school viewers a day.

Channel Five will broadcast the show in Britain from the end of the year. Davis voices Miss Spider, who lives in the whimsical woodland idyll of Sunny Patch with her husband Holley and their eight children.

"Kristin Davis's performance is so warm and kind-hearted, she gives this eight-legged Mum a very human appeal," said a show spokesman.

The first book in the series, Miss Spider's Tea Party, was written in 1994 by David Kirk, and more than 20 stories followed. Publisher Nicholas Callaway today confirmed the UK deal, saying: "Miss Spider is coming out in Puffin books in Britain next year. The books and the show are huge in America."

Davis, 39, was nominated for an Emmy award for her Sex And The City role as Charlotte York. Miss Spider will be her first role on British TV since the final series of the comedy-drama was broadcast here earlier in the year.

Her co-stars, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall, have already reappeared on Britain's TV screens. Parker is the face of Gap and Lux shower gel, while Cattrall appears in advertisements for Tetley tea.
