Nicole Kidman's new husband Keith Urban has gone into rehab.

Country crooner Keith has a history of battling booze and hard drugs but had appeared to be living a picture-perfect married life with Kidman, his wife of four months, by his side.

Speaking after entering rehab, Urban admitted his old ghosts had came back to haunt him.

Urban said he "let one's guard down on recovery" - and apologised for the "hurt this has caused Nicole."

Despite Kidman's unwavering support for Urban as he checked back into rehab, he has got to be thinking long and hard about the prenup she got him to sign.

Much was made off the terms of the agreement before they got married in Sydney back in June.

Urban will reportedly get more than £320,000 for every year the couple is married in the event they go their separate ways.

But it is thought that Kidman, 39, got her lawyers to put in a clause that will let her leave the marriage without paying Urban a penny if he drinks excessively or takes drugs.

The news has stunned showbusinesss onlookers after Urban appeared to have completely settled down for a quiet life with his new bride where the main excitement appeared to be going on daily coffee runs.

Urban confirmed that he checked himself into rehab on Thursday night with new wife Kidman.

"I deeply regret the hurt this has caused Nicole and the ones that love and support me," Urban said. "One can never let one's guard down on recovery and I'm afraid that I have."

In a determined tone, he added: "With the strength and unwavering support I am blessed to have from my wife, family and friends, I am determined and resolved to a positive outcome."

All immediate appearances by Urban have been postponed.

Nicole, 38, met singer Keith, also 38, last July - and immediately there were concerns over his wild living passed.

He has admitted in the past to taking crack cocaine when he was a struggling musician.

And he has previously had to check himself into rehab in a bid to keep those demons at bay.

He initially credited meeting Nicole for helping him become cleaner and healthier than ever before.

Since their wedding they were mostly seen pottering around Nashville, Tennessee, where Keith first set up home to break into country music.

Rather than partying, they spent most of the time working out, getting coffee at Starbucks and eating at local sandwich shops.

But his admission shows that those demons never completely vanished.

He has recently played a series of shows in support of his new record 'Love, Pain and the Whole Crazy Thing' when temptations of life on the road are ever-present.

The couple dated for just several months before tying the knot earlier this year in June in Sydney.

Kidman, who was last seen on screen in Bewitched, is divorced from Tom Cruise, with whom she has two adopted children Isabella, 12, and 10-year-old Conor.

Since she split from Cruise in 2001, Nicole has had a series of high-profile failed relationships. Keith previously dated Sports Illustrated beauty Niki Taylor.
