Julie Andrews has said she “very much doubts” that she will reprise her role as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in The Princess Diaries 3.

Last month, the Hollywood Reporter claimed that a third instalment is in development at Disney. It is said to be a sequel to The Princess Diaries 2, which was released in 2004, rather than a reboot of the original 2001 film.

The Princess Diaries stars Anne Hathaway as teenager Mia Thermopolis, who is told by her estranged grandmother that she is heir to the throne of a small European country called Genovia.

The first two movies were global hits, making $165 million and $134 million respectively, and remain iconic early-noughties movies.

Despite the initial excitement, the 87-year-old British actress has put a dent in film fans’ hopes and said her involvement is “probably not going to be possible”.

She told Access Hollywood in an interview: “I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible.

"It was talked about very shortly after [the second sequel] came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older, and Annie, the princess or queen, is so much older.

“And I am not sure where it would float or run. In terms of us doing [another movie], I very much doubt that now.”

In November, it was reported that the script for the new film is being written by Aadrita Mukerji, whose credits include Reacher, Supergirl, and Scorpion.

The Princess Diaries producer Debra Martin Chase is reported to be involved, as is Melissa Stack, who was the screenwriter behind The Other Woman.

Previously, Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway admitted she is keen to reprise her role, but on condition that Andrews would be involved.

She told ET in October: “I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it.

“If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”
