Jack Whitehall has admitted he regrets making a "crass joke" about the Queen in 2012.

The comedian told BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs he regretted a remark he made while filming was the Big Fat Quiz of the Year for Channel 4.

He was sat alongside teammate James Corden when he suggested the monarch might have caught a urinary infection from Prince Philip.

The joke received a number of official complaints to broadcasting watchdog OfCom, with many saying the gag had gone "too far".

The 29-year-old comic said he regretted making the "crass joke", in part due to the media scrutiny it placed on his family.

"That was not nice because it was something I'd said that caused them upset and that was the bit that hurt the most.

"I'm fine, I have a relatively thick skin, but I never wanted to drag them into it."

Mr Whitehall said he is "a lot more careful" with his jokes now, often self-censoring as a result of the incident.

He is scheduled to host the BRIT Awards on Wednesday, February 21.

Desert Island Discs is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Sundays at 11.15am
