There are few things that do not irk Jack Dee. His current set resembles a veritable check list of modern-day irritations. Showers (overpowering or barely a dribble). Children (rule the roost). Michael Jackson's pyjamas. Bungee jumpers. Balloons. You name it, it gets Jack's back up.

But the famous curmudgeon could at last be mellowing. When he first broke through, a decade ago, a smirk was as rare as hen's teeth. These days, with hit TV shows, the Celebrity Big Brother 2001 title and a 100-date national tour - culminating with four London shows this week - under his belt, he has every reason to smile.

This has given Dee a new, skilful lightness of touch that has propelled him into comedy's premier league. He's truly in his element onstage, where he can turn complaining about modern-life into an art form.

Mellower? Maybe. Funnier than ever? Definitely.
