ITV1 slumped to its worst ever audience share on Saturday thanks to the FA Cup Final clash between Liverpool and West Ham.

Across the day, the channel had only an 11.8% share of viewing - its lowest since records began.

Ratings were hit by the BBC's coverage of the football, hailed as the best FA Cup Final in years.

A peak of 11.3 million viewers tuned in to BBC1 to see Liverpool win on penalties.

Overall, BBC1 had a 36.4% audience share.

ITV1's highest-rated programme of the day was Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, which managed just 3.9 million viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures.

At the same time, the National Lottery Jet Set on BBC1 had seven million
viewers while Casualty had 7.5 million.

Sci-fi movie X-Men had an audience of three million, compared to 5.9 million for BBC1's Strictly Dance Fever and 8.6 million for Doctor Who, which featured the return of the Cybermen.

An ITV1 spokesman said: "A big sporting occasion like the FA Cup Final will often cause a ratings blip."

BBC bosses were celebrating their ratings bonanza.

A spokesman said: "We are delighted that the thrilling FA Cup Final and the Cybermen's return to Doctor Who proved a winning combination to BBC1 viewers."
