Former Baywatch star David Hasselhoff could lead a new assault on the pop charts.

An internet campaign to propel the star's latest musical offering to number one is gathering pace, with an email sent to hundreds of thousands of homes and offices across London.

After the recent success of the Gnarls Barkley single Crazy, which topped the charts due to download sales only, a website hopes to do the same for "the Hoff ".

People register their email address with the site and once 75,000 have signed up, they will all be sent an email on a Monday morning reminding them to buy the single.

The site's founders believe enough people will then go online to buy Looking For Freedom from Apple's iTunes Music Store to take it straight to number one without the need for live appearances, positive reviews and airplay.

It is believed the site was initially set up as a joke to reflect Hasselhoff 's cult status online - garnered through his roles in the cheesy lifeguard drama and in Knight Rider, the Eighties series about a black, talking car.

The site's founders, who remain anonymous, claim about 2,000 people are joining every day.

Hasselhoff has a very successful pop career in parts of Europe, where his 1990 German concert tour emphasised East and West reunification. However, Britain and America have so far remained largely impervious to his musical talents.

The site's creators claim on the site to be fans who want to "give the legend the respect he rightfully deserves".

They add : "We are not making any money from this. We are doing this purely from the good of our hearts. Think what he's given to the world. Knight Rider. Baywatch. The reunification of East and West Germany. Untold laughter from forwarded emails of him in hotpants. It's time we gave something back. Let's get Hoff to Number One."

The site isn't Hasselhoff 's first brush with internet fame. His greatest hits album, Looking For ...The Best is one of the highest-rated CDs on Amazon.com with a huge number of top scores, as part of an ongoing internet joke.

Almost all tongue-in-cheek reviewers give it five stars, misspell Hasselhoff 's name and usually end with the phrase: "The song Hot Shot City is particularly good!"
