Kwes was hailed as one of London’s brightest young music prospects after receiving universal acclaim for his debut album ilp, but the singer-songwriter has revealed that he is ready to retire from making music and performing live.

The 26-year-old from Lewisham says he feels happier behind a mixing desk, having produced for artists including Damon Albarn, Solange Knowles, Eliza Doolittle and The xx.

He said: “I do love making my own music, but I’m a lot more comfortable working with other artists. I’ve got a few more albums left with [current record label] Warp.

“After I fulfil that contract I may stop making music and concentrate on making other people’s. And maybe looking into A&Ring [talent scouting] and signing people, helping project manage and try to get more good music out there.

“I really don’t like playing live, either. I’ve just finished a tour and it’s a massive weight off my shoulders, to be honest. Fortunately, I have producing to fall back on. If I didn’t have that, then I’d probably be screwed.”

Kwes, real name Kwesi Sey, has just returned from New Orleans where he was drafted in to work on Beyoncé’s sister Solange’s forthcoming album.

“Just being in that place was so inspiring,” he said. “It is unlike anywhere else I’ve ever been. Everyone that she got involved in that record, she got them involved because she feels they have something to bring. She is a completely different artist to Beyoncé. They come from different creative standpoints.

“I’d say Beyoncé is taking ownership of her creativity, which is lovely to hear and see, but I think Solange has been on that path a bit longer.”

Kwes was speaking after shooting a documentary for London fashion house AllSaints and Dazed Vision, New Music Cities: South London, featuring himself, Roots Manuva, Mount Kimbie and Katy B.
