The Royal Festival Hall hosted a star-studded event last night to celebrate the musical career of Sir Tim Rice with performances from Gemma Arterton, Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Keane front man Tom Chaplin.

The iconic song writer was joined by a host of famous faces including Sophie Ellis Bextor, X Factor star Diana Vickers and The Who’s Roger Daltrey.

The BBC concert orchestra accompanied the performances of a whole host of stage and screen productions by the multi Oscar winner, ranging from Evita to Jesus Christ Superstar to James Bond.

Singer Laura Mvula donned tribal face paint and African inspired clothing to perform a hit from the long running West End musical The Lion King.

She took to Twitter his morning to say: “Had fun channelling my inner lioness #thecirceloflife #TimRice #RoyalFestivalHall #tribalmakeup.”

Diana Vickers looked glamorous in a grey flower print dress as she performed a duet with singer James Fox.

Gemma Arterton - who is to make her stage debut in Made in Dagenham later this year - wowed in a black Lanvin gown.

Comedian Rob Brydon took to the stage to tell of his nerves saying "It's a big, dramatic ballad and foolishly I've agreed to sing it at this event with proper singers," before performing It's Easy For You.

Tim Minchin offered up an added dose of entertainment, and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber joined Rice on stage to reflect on the songwriter's career.
