An 'EastEnders' stuntman has been left in a critical condition after falling from a pier.

The 21-year-old action man - thought to be from Liverpool - was standing in for actor Neil McDermott (Ryan Malloy) when a violent gust of wind threw him off balance during a fight scene in which he discovers his younger sister, troubled teen Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty), is a prostitute.

Being sent tumbling from the promenade, he then smashed his head on a group of rocks.

A source told the Daily Mirror: "In the shoot, Neil's character finds out his sister, Whitney, is a prostitute and tracks down her pimp to a pier.

"The two come to blows but the scene went wrong and one of them fell off. I heard one of the paramedics say that he was moving, but it looked like a very serious incident."

The stuntman - whose name has not been revealed - was taken to Queen's Hospital in Romford, Essex, after the fall in nearby Southend-On-Sea.

A spokesman for the BBC One soap said: "We can confirm that a stuntman was injured. We all wish him a speedy recovery."
