Drama hit Downton Abbey went out on a high with more than ten million people tuning in to finale of the period series.

The ITV1 show drew its largest audience yet with an average of 10.1 million for the concluding episode last night.

Last month network bosses commissioned a second series on the back of the programme's runaway success.

An eight-part series - again scripted by Oscar-winning writer Julian Fellowes - will be screened next year.

Downton Abbey tells the story of the Crawley family - and domestic staff - at its country seat.

The show drew an average of 7.7 million when the first episode was screened in September, and it continued to build as the series went on.
