Reclusive rapper Mike Skinner today had more reasons to celebrate as he topped both the UK singles and album charts - days after he was nominated for a £20,000 Mercury Music Prize.

The 25-year-old, who shuns award ceremonies, also saw debut album Original Pirate Material return to the top 40, re-entering at number 36.

Birmingham-based Skinner, who records under the name The Streets, is joint-favourite for the annual industry award after he was shortlisted for his second long player, A Grand Don't Come For Free.

His string-driven single Dry Your Eyes today debuted straight at number one, knocking dance track Lola's Theme, by the Shapeshifters, into second place.

Velvet Underground founder Lou Reed also has a new hit single, charting at number 10 almost four years after a charity version of his song Perfect Day claimed the top spot.

The remixed version of his album track Satellite of Love has been released after becoming an anthem in Miami clubs.

Goth rockers The Cure secured a new entry at number 25 with The End of The World, while former Bros star Matt Goss was back in the list with single Fly at number 31.

Skinner's album success knocked disco act Scissor Sisters into second place in the album charts with their eponymous release after 25 weeks on the chart.

Indie band Keane, also nominated for a Mercury award, rose to three with their Hopes And Fears album, while Swedish group The Hives entered at number seven with Tyrannosaurus Hives.

Co-favourites for the award, Scottish art-rockers Franz Ferdinand saw their self-titled debut drop two places to 19.
