Friends and celebrity fans of the late Freddie Mercury may not be Doing All Right this morning after a raucous night spent celebrating what would have been his 65th birthday.

Actor and comedian Matt Lucas was among those who paid tribute to the Queen lead singer, claiming that he would retreat to his bedroom as a teenager to listen to songs after being bullied for being gay.

He sang his favourite tune, Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy, adding his bedroom wall had been covered with pictures of Mercury.

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and heiress Holly Branson hit the Savoy Hotel dance floor to classic hits performed by Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor, who were joined by guitarist Jeff Beck.

Stephen Fry, Mike Rutherford and Chris Evans all lent their support while Tom Chaplin from Keane also took to the stage. Many dressed in Freddie costumes and wore fake moustaches.

Lord Dalmeny, the vice-chairman of Sotheby's, acted as auctioneer at the charity event - and after walking on stage in a coat disrobed to reveal a cut-out suit, PVC briefs, fishnet stockings and suspenders.

The auction raised more than £100,000 for the Aids charity Mercury Phoenix Trust. Mercury died from the disease in 1991 at 45. The cast from the Dominion Theatre's production of We Will Rock You turned up to serenade guests with a passionate rendition of the title song.
