Rock star Pete Doherty was bailed by police today after being arrested on suspicion of fresh drug offences

The 27-year-old Babyshambles front man was held in an east London police station on suspicion of possessing Class A drugs after police stopped a car.

The 21-year-old driver of the car, who was also arrested, has been released on bail to a date next month pending further inquiries.

Doherty's arrest came just three hours after he was spared jail by magistrates for possessing controlled drugs.

Looking dishevelled and wearing a leather jacket and jeans, the singer left the police station today accompanied by his solicitor.

As he walked down the road, he told waiting reporters: "I feel like smacking you in the face, mate, stay away from me."

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said Doherty, from Fulham, had been released on police bail.

"He has been bailed pending further inquiries to a date in June."

Although police said yesterday that the two men were arrested after a vehicle was stopped in Roman Road, east London, on suspicion of possessing what was believed to be Class A drugs with the intent to supply, Doherty's solicitor Sean Curran said his client was held only on suspicion of possession.
