Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes ready to compete at National Television Awards

TV heroes Doctor Who and Sherlock Holmes will do battle tonight as they try to take the glory at the National Television Awards.

The two shows clash in the battle for best drama while their stars - Matt Smith as The Doctor and Benedict Cumberbatch - compete for top drama performance.

Philip Glenister also competes for the performance prize, for his role in Ashes to Ashes, while David Jason is nominated for A Touch Of Frost.

The glitzy bash at the O2 Arena in south east London is one of the top nights for TV stars in the awards calendar and will draw a roll-call of glamorous on-screen talent.

Also competing for the drama prize with the adventures of the Time Lord and Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective are fellow BBC1 series Waterloo Road plus Channel 4's Shameless.
Awards host Dermot O'Leary is up for his first National Television Award for best entertainment presenter at the ceremony for his work on X Factor.

He is competing against Britain's Got Talent stars Ant and Dec, aiming for a tenth consecutive win in the category. Davina McCall and Paul O'Grady are also in the running.

Two of Simon Cowell's shows, the X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, are in the running for the talent show category against BBC rival Strictly Come Dancing and ITV1's Dancing On Ice.

Coronation Street, which last month celebrated its 50th anniversary, is up for best serial, against EastEnders, which last year marked its 25th birthday.

Winners of the awards, screened live on ITV1, are voted by viewers.

Performances will include an appearance by X Factor winner Matt Cardle.
