David Hasselhoff has sensationally revealed that Princess Diana wanted to bed him but he resisted her charms because he was a married man.

The Knight Rider star's boast will stun Diana fans and likely generate a wave of disbelief and criticism that they were made to plug his new autobiography, ironically titled Making Waves.

In his book, Hasselhoff also reveals singer Elton John lusted after him as they shared a concert bill in Germany.

But it is the claims that Diana was 'smitten' with the Baywatch star when he met the Princess at London charity event in 1993 that has sparked the most controversy.

Hasselhoff, who is tipped to get his first UK Chart Number One with cheesy cult single Jump In My Car, said Diana was impressed by his muscular 6ft 4in body.

"She was smitten with me since I am so tall. I was smitten with her since she was so tall," he said.

The troubled actor, who has battled alcoholism and is recently divorced from his wife Pamela, insisted there was a sexual attraction and the pair would have slept together "if circumstances had been different".

He added the princess joked: "You look much better with your clothes on," and he replied: "Well Ma,am, so do you." This cheeky remark made Diana apparently burst into a fit of giggles and blush, he said.

Hasselhoff also claims that he could sense Diana's pain over her failed marriage to Prince Charles.

"I probably would have gone after her if circumstances had been different. In the end, I just wanted to be a friend and to hang out with her," he said.

Infact at a recent polo match, the American actor recalls approaching Prince Harry. "I just strolled up to him and said: 'Hey I knew your mom and I thought she was awesome'."

Prince Harry's response is unknown.
