Simon Cowell is more used to barking insults than saving skins.

A smiling Cowell appears in the poster with his arms around a dog.
He says: "If you wouldn't wear your dog, please don't wear fur."

Cowell, 45, follows Hollywood stars Joaquin Phoenix and Charlize Theron, and singer Pink, who have previously appeared in adverts against fur.

He created the image, which will appear in the UK and United States, for campaign group Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

Peta spokeswoman Dawn Carr said: "We're thrilled to have Simon on board and this advert brings home the reality that while people very often love to have their dogs and cats around, the fur trade means animals have been cruelly trapped or beaten to death."
