Actor Jay Thomas, known for his roles in Cheers and Ray Donovan, has died at the age of 69.

The actor, who played Carla’s husband Eddie LeBec in hit sitcom Cheers, has lost his battle to cancer.

His agent Don Buchwald said: "Jay was one of a kind, never at a loss for words and filled with so much fun and wonderfully wacky thoughts and behavior."

Thomas also played tabloid talk-show host Jerry Gold on Murphy Brown, earning him two Emmy awards for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series in 1990 and 1991.

His first television role was as Remo DaVinci in Mork & Mindy, which starred the late Robin Williams.

Most recently, he was seen in Ray Donovan as Stalker.com owner Marty Grossman.

Born Jon Thomas Terrell in Texas in 1948, he had also hosted a self-titled weekday radio talk show since 2005.

He has a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame for his work in radio.

Thomas is survived by his wife Sally and sons Sam, Max and TJ, who were by his side when he passed away.
