Emmerdale star Emma Atkins is quitting her role as Charity Tate, she announced today.

The 29-year-old is leaving the ITV soap to pursue other acting roles.

Since arriving in Emmerdale in 2000, former prostitute Charity has become one
of the show's most controversial characters.

She had a lesbian fling with Zoe Tate, enjoyed a steamy affair with her cousin Cain and was jailed when husband Chris Tate killed himself then framed her for murder.

Atkins said: "It's been an incredibly difficult decision to leave but I feel that after four and a half years playing Charity it is time to move on.

"I still can't believe how lucky I have been to be trusted with so many fantastic storylines and I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every minute.

"I will be desperately sad to say goodbye to everyone but there are so many other roles that I would like to try and it's important to me that Charity leaves on a high."

Emmerdale bosses are now planning an explosive exit for Charity in the New Year.

"We are sad to see Emma go but the departure of Charity gives us scope for a fantastic storyline over the winter months that will keep viewers gripped," a spokesman said.
