Yusuf Islam has responded to the Brexit debate with a rendition of his 1970 hit song Wild World.

The British star – formerly known as Cat Stevens – broke out into song during an interview with the Evening Standard.

When asked his opinion on the EU Referendum, the Dubai-based singer decided that the best way to answer was through the medium of song.

“Ooh,” he sang. Ooh, baby, baby it’s a wild word.”

After the impromptu performance, Islam said: “I’d say that closing yourself off from the wider section of humanity is not a good idea.

“If you look at the best models it was always when there was a convergence towards unity and bringing different elements of the tribe together that you find strength.”

Yusuf has organised a charity concert to raise funds for child refugees, taking place at Westminster’s Central Hall on Tuesday night.

He has also recorded a news song, He Was Alone, which is part of his wider campaign, #YouAreNotAlone.

The musician came up with the idea for the new campaign after “watching the news on a daily basis: seeing the tragedy unfolding, refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean, trying to get to safer lands."

“All the deaths, and the numbers, were boggling. You couldn’t really make sense of it. Each one of these refugees is a human being and has their own story," he said.

"So I wanted to raise the issue of the individual, the single soul, and the children represent that the best because of their innocence and the fact they have nothing to do with this horrible war.”
