Awards season is about to kick off and the nominations are coming in thick and fast.

Honouring the writing talent behind the camera, the Writers Guild of America has now announced its 2016 nominations.

Films including Bridge of Spies, written by Matt Charman and the Coen brothers, will go up against Andrea Berloff and Jonathan Herman’s Straight Outta Compton in the Original Screenplay category.

Comedian Amy Schumer has also been nominated in the category for her 2015 film Trainwreck, as have the writers of Spotlight and Sicario.

The Big Short will go up against Carol, The Martian, Steve Jobs and Trumbo in the Adapted Screenplay category.

Documentaries are also honoured at the awards and this year’s contenders include Being Canadian and Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief.

The awards aren’t considered to be a strong Oscars predictor as they only allow screenplays written by WGA members or produced under the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement to be nominated.

This means that films including The Hateful Eight, Brooklyn , Room and The Danish Girl are ineligible.
