Dancing on Ice star Wes Nelson has confirmed that his packed training schedule for the ITV show was “heavily involved” in his recent split from Megan Barton Hanson, revealing that his ex wishes that he had never taken part in the show.

In an interview with Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes on This Morning, the former Love Island star said that training for the ITV contest has “pretty much taken over all of [his] schedule.”

When Schofield asked him whether this “work” was the cause of his break-up with Barton Hanson, Nelson agreed, explaining: “It was heavily involved. Not the way that the media has made out, though, with it being Vanessa this, Vanessa that, it’s not anything to do with that.”

“It’s more so the fact that it’s so time confusing, the fact that I’m away from home all the time, it makes it very difficult to plan things ahead.”

He went on to claim that his inability to “spend quality time” with Barton Hanson had an impact upon his former girlfriend, leaving her feeling “down” and “sad.”

When Schofield pointed out that the contest would “end in a few weeks’ time,” leaving them “all the time in the world” to spend together, Nelson responded: “This is what I was trying to explain when I was in the relationship, but then again you’ve got to look at it from her point of view.

“You can’t just say right, wait there for a bit I’m doing to do this.

“If you’re unhappy and it’s making you that upset, feel that down and sad, who am I to say, ‘Just keep being sad, keep being upset.’

“I think she wishes that I didn’t do Dancing on Ice,” he continued, adding that the couple had wanted to live “a simpler life” – which proved “very difficult” after finding fame on Love Island last summer.

The 20-year-old went on to confirm that he “can’t really contact” his ex as she has blocked him on social media.

The couple announced their split in January, after six months together.

Nelson and Barton Hanson confirmed the news in a statement which parodied Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s infamous “conscious uncoupling” remarks, and told fans that they would continue to “co-parent” their pet hamster, Jon Snow.

Yesterday, Barton Hanson broke down in tears in an emotional Instagram video, telling fans she had thought Nelson to be “the one” and revealing that the last few weeks had been “really tough.”

This Morning airs on weekdays from 10.30am to 12.30pm on ITV. Dancing on Ice continues on Sunday at 6pm on ITV.
